  • Japan tops World Economic Forum's Travel & Tourism rankings.
    Japan topped the WEF's 2021 Travel & Tourism Development Index rankings for the first time, despite the current COVID-19 restrictions. The country's advanced transportation infrastructure, abundant quality accommodation and high security and safety levels were major factors in its evaluation.

  • The Gion Festival will be held in Kyoto this year as usual.
    The month-long Gion Festival has begun. Its highlight is the procession of elaborately decorated floats through downtown Kyoto, which will be staged true to its original form.

  • Tsunoshima Island in Yamaguchi prefecture is famous for its spectacular early summer scenery.
    Tsunoshima offers a small island escape within an easy and affordable day trip from Japan's main island of Honshu. It is frequently used as a filming location for TV dramas and commercials because of its beautiful scenery and cobalt blue sea. Locally caught grilled squid is just one of the island's culinary specialties; its crunchy texture and mouth-watering sweetness make it an unforgettable experience.

  • The Sannoji Wind Bell Festival has now started.
    Sannoji Temple in the town of Sasaguri, one of the Sasaguri Shikoku Pilgrimage's 88 sacred sites, is now holding its "Wind Bell Festival." The festival runs until October 2. Wind chimes in the temple grounds create a soothing background of tinkling sounds; visitors can record their wishes on strips of paper and attach these to the wind chimes.
